Apple picking near Auburn, Maine — Ricker Hill Orchards in Turner: pick-your-own Sept–October, fresh cider donuts, corn maze, and hard cider. What to know and where to stay.
The classic central-Maine fall outing is apple picking, and the area's anchor orchard is Ricker Hill Orchards in Turner — about 20 minutes north of Saffron Inn. Pick-your-own runs September through late October, the cider donuts are the real draw, and there's enough else going on to make a half-day of it.
Founded in 1803, Ricker Hill is a genuine piece of Maine farming history, now spread across 400-plus acres of apple orchards at 295 Buckfield Road (Route 117) in Turner. It's a working farm and a family destination rolled into one.
What you'll find in season:
Hours are generally 8 a.m.–6 p.m. daily in season, but pick-your-own availability depends on the harvest, so it's worth a quick call to (207) 225-5552 or a look at their site before you drive up.
Mid-October is the sweet spot: the apples are in, and it lines up with peak fall foliage in central Maine. Make a full day of it — a foliage drive, an hour in the orchard, donuts at the stand, and a slow loop back.
That's also the busiest stretch, so for a calmer visit, aim for a weekday morning. Bring cash or a card, wear shoes you don't mind getting muddy, and bring a bag for the donuts you'll inevitably buy on the way out.
Apple picking pairs naturally with everything else central Maine does well in autumn — see our guide to things to do in Auburn for the rest of the season's lineup. Saffron Inn is a central, comfortable, fairly priced base about 20 minutes from the orchard, with free parking and a fridge to keep your haul (and your cider) cold.
