Auburn packs a surprising amount into a small city. A ski hill inside the city limits, a working riverwalk along a genuine waterfall, a clean lake, nature sanctuaries, mill-era heritage, a growing food-and-beer scene, and a festival calendar that draws crowds from across New England — all within a short drive of Saffron Inn at 170 Center Street. Here's how locals actually spend time in Auburn and its twin city, Lewiston, season by season and interest by interest.
Get outside
The outdoors is Auburn's strongest suit, and most of it is within ten or fifteen minutes of downtown.
- Lost Valley Ski Area — a friendly ski-and-ride hill about 3.5 miles from the inn, with mountain biking and a brewpub the rest of the year. One of the best learn-to-ski hills in Maine.
- The Androscoggin Riverwalk — a paved path along the Great Falls connecting Auburn and Lewiston. The default local walk, and the heart of the riverfront.
- Lake Auburn — a big, clean lake about ten minutes north, prized for fishing and scenery. (It's the area's drinking-water supply, so it's for fishing and views, not swimming — see the guide for where to swim instead.)
- Mount Apatite Park — a large Auburn park with trails and a genuinely unusual draw: it's one of New England's better rockhounding sites, sitting on old tourmaline and feldspar quarries.
- Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary — a large nature preserve in Lewiston with easy trail loops, popular for birding and a quiet walk.
- Range Pond State Park — about 15 minutes away in Poland, with a sand beach and swimming for a warm-weather lake day.
Festivals and events worth planning around
L/A's event calendar is fuller than visitors expect.
- Lewiston-Auburn Balloon Festival (August 21–23, 2026) — 30-plus hot-air balloons rising over the Androscoggin. The signature weekend of the year. Book lodging months ahead.
- Dempsey Challenge (September 19, 2026) — the run/walk and cycling fundraiser founded by Lewiston-raised actor Patrick Dempsey, benefiting the Dempsey Center.
- The full slate — markets, concerts, college events, and seasonal festivals are all in our 2026 events calendar.
Eat and drink
For a small city, L/A eats and drinks well.
- Restaurants — from family-style standbys to newer downtown spots, our guide covers the best restaurants in Auburn-Lewiston.
- Breweries — Baxter Brewing inside the historic Bates Mill, the Lost Valley Brewpub at the ski hill, and Bear Bones Beer in downtown Lewiston.
History and heritage
Lewiston-Auburn was built on textiles and shoes, and the bones of that era are everywhere.
- Museum L/A — the region's mill-and-shoe heritage museum, with a permanent exhibit on the industrial age that made the cities.
- Bates College — a beautiful liberal-arts campus in Lewiston, open to walking visitors, with public lectures, performances, and art year-round.
- Franco-American L/A — the towering Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul and the Gendron Franco Center reflect the French-Canadian heritage that shaped Lewiston-Auburn's culture and food.
Use Auburn as a base
Auburn sits in the middle of southern and central Maine, which makes it an underrated home base. Portland and the coast are about 40 minutes south; the western mountains and lakes about an hour north. See our guide to day trips from Auburn for ideas and drive times.
Season by season
- Winter — ski and ride at Lost Valley, then warm up at the brewpub. The quietest, most affordable lodging weeks (outside holidays) are now.
- Spring — the Riverwalk thaws, the lakes open, and Maine Maple Sunday kicks off the season in late March.
- Summer — festivals, farmers markets, lake days at Range Pond, and the big balloon festival in August.
- Fall — peak foliage in mid-October, apple picking at the orchards north of town, and the Dempsey Challenge in September. Many locals' favorite season here.
Where to stay
Saffron Inn is right in the middle of it — 170 Center Street, Auburn, minutes from the Riverwalk, Lost Valley, and the festival grounds, and an easy launch point for day trips. Free parking, free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour front desk, and fair rates that leave more in the budget for the trip itself.
