The best hikes near Auburn, Maine — Mount Apatite, Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary, and Bradbury Mountain — from easy nature walks to a short family-friendly summit.
You don't have to drive to the mountains to get a good walk in around Auburn. Within 30 minutes of Saffron Inn you've got woodland trails, a real nature sanctuary, and a short summit with a genuine view — from a five-minute drive to an easy half-day. Here are the three best, plus a couple of easy add-ons.
About 2.5 miles from the inn, Mount Apatite Park is a big Auburn woods-and-trails park with a twist: it sits on old tourmaline and feldspar quarries, which makes it one of New England's better-known rockhounding spots. Walk the trails for their own sake, or bring a small bag and let the kids hunt for minerals along the way. Easy, flat-ish, and close.
About 3.5 miles away in Lewiston, Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary is a large preserve laced with easy, well-marked trail loops. It's the local go-to for a quiet nature walk and some of the best birding in the area. Good for all ages and a gentle pace.
For an actual summit, drive about 25–30 minutes south to Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal. The easy route to the top takes only 10–15 minutes, and the payoff is a wide view over the rolling countryside toward the coast. It's one of the most family-friendly summit hikes in southern Maine — small effort, big reward — and a favorite for a quick morning out.
Saffron Inn is a central base for all of it — 170 Center Street, Auburn, with free parking, a 24-hour front desk, and hot showers for when you come back down the mountain. See things to do in Auburn for the rest of the area's lineup.
